Check out this indie gem – IA: Initiate

September 20, 2015 By Kat

IA: Initiate by John Darryl Winston came on my radar via a mutual Twitter friend, and although it’s not YA Paranormal Romance (just YA Paranormal), you still have got to read this. The writing has a unique feel to it, crafted carefully with a classic feel. I fell in love with the characters easily – Naz and Meri have a realistic brother-sister relationship and you can’t help but root for them in their current situation. I loved the hints about the paranormal aspect of it, even the flashback scenes (which in most books just pisses me off) were interesting. John tells me the sequel is coming out in November, and I can’t wait to read it!

Here’s my full review:

I very much enjoyed IA: Initiate – it reads like a modern classic, with carefully crafted words that have a unique rhythm. I love the parallel stories of Cory and Naz, the vivid description of the Enclave, and mostly, Naz’s relationship with Meri. I wish it had more super powers, but I understand why it didn’t. The pacing was relaxed but the writing was so rich I didn’t mind it, like a said, it has a classic feel. There are so many things I can’t wait to learn about in the sequel: the girl at the water fountain, Naz’s powers and origin, the gang, Meri’s powers… I could go on and on. John’s ability to grab the reader with his prose, interesting plot and realistic characterization is formidable. The super powers are merely icing on the cake. 🙂
